BPSU to host 3rd e-Quality Summit

The university will go on a national scale and is now preparing to host the 3rd e-Quality Summit on November 2008.

Dr. Delfin O. Magpantay gave his approval to the hosting of the summit. The president thinks that this will serve as a good venue to establish linkages with other state colleges and universities as well as practitioners in the field of information and communications technology (ICT).

This decision came out during the 2nd e-Quality Summit held at Dakak Park and Beach Resort in Dapitan City last November 6-10, 2007.

The e-Quality Group of the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT) is a group of state universities and colleges aiming to integrate ICT in educational learning, teaching and school management.

BPSU-hosted sustainability planning workshop successful

Sustainability Planning Workshop meets objectives; participants declare their commitment to iSchools.

The Bataan Peninsula State University, in its aim to encourage participation and support from the public high schools and local government units, hosted a three-day Sustainability Planning Workshop at Crown Royale Hotel in the City of Balanga last October 15-17.

Even with ninety-two percent of the expected participants composed of local government officials and public high school principals coming from the National Capital Region (NCR), Central Luzon and the Bicol Region, Miss Lydia A. Pinili, MIS Head and ICT Coordinator, said that the activity was a success. The workshop was designed for the participants to understand what the project is all about. It also aims to enable the stakeholders and participants to share information and inputs on existing national telecenter initiatives. Also undertaken during the activity was the formulation of sustainability plans that would help the participating schools in maintaining the iSchools Community eCenters and building their cluster teams. Also tackled during the culmination of the activity is the use of open source software.

By successfully equipping the participants with adequate knowledge on the project and the best possible ways to keep it going, stakeholders such as the Parent-Teachers-Community Association (PTCA), LGU officials and Division ICT Coordinators vowed their full support to the project. They said they are willing to provide all means to sustain iSchools.

BPSU now involved in iSchools project

Bataan Peninsula State University has been tapped by the CICT to implement the iSchools project in ten (10) public highschools in the provinces of Bataan, Pampanga, Bulacan, Zambales and Olongapo City.

As partner of the CICT, BPSU is tasked to perform community mobilization activities to assess the capability of target high school recipients in terms of availability and adequacy of physical facilities for laboratories. The university shall also ensure that all necessary ICT equipment shall be delivered and the Internet connection is properly installed. The maintenance of these equipment shall be ensured by the MIS staff. Likewise, the University’s pool experts will serve as trainers of high school faculty, administrators and students.

These ICT experts must be able to comply with the standards set by the CICT. Two batches of examinees composed of ICT faculty and personnel have taken and passed the Computer and Internet Literacy course (CILC) Certification. They are Gatherson De Leon and Andrew Valenzuela (from the Institute of Business and Accountancy); Maria Lolita F. Garcia, Marvin G. Sulit and Aristotle Cordova, staff of the Management Information Systems (MIS) Office. The abovementioned will be assigned to conduct the Teacher’s Training on ICT Literacy Program.

Miss Lydia Pinili, MIS Head, serves as the team leader of the project and coordinator to the CICT. The other teams shall be composed of Benjamin Adraneda Jr, Luisa A. Roque, and Eric G. Lopez for Project Management. The web development team is comprised of Lirio Baluyot and Harold Enriquez. The laboratory management shall be managed by Emmanuel Masangcap and Chester dela Rosa.

Director Emmanuel C. Macaraeg of the Operations, Planning and Development Office serves as the Project Consultant.

Through the support of President Delfin O. Magpantay, the iSchools project implementers are very optimistic that they will be able to deliver what is expected of them. They have declared their commitment towards fulfilling the objectives of iSchools. Furthermore, it is also BPSU’s aim to provide empowerment to the community through ICT and iSchools shall serve as a very good avenue to fulfill this goal.

iSchools?

Let me share to you what I first thought of iSchools during the time when I had zero knowledge about the project. You see, I do not get to read newspapers often so I get left behind with what is happening in our country.

I first heard the term “iSchools” from Ms. Lydia Pinili, MIS Head and ICT Coordinator of BPSU. “This is another challenge,” she said as she read the letter coming from the Commission on Information and Communications Technology (CICT). And I wondered what that really is, until they started their community mobilization activities in the nearby provinces on the month of September.

Getting involved in this project...well, I thought I would not be. I thought only the MIS staff and computer experts will have to participate in this project. It was only in October when Ma’am Lydia informed me that she wants me to join her team.
